Mafia Island, placed off the delta of the Rufiji River in southern Tanzania, is an ideal getaway destinations for anyone wishing to explore one of the world’s few unspoilt islands. The island is located about 120 km from Dar es Salaam and is one of the six districts of Tanzania’s Pwani Region.
The economy of the island of Mafia is primarily based on fishing and agriculture. An important thing to note is that fishing is restricted on the southern side of the Mafia island within the boundaries of the Marine national park. The region of Mafia has an awesome history that goes way back in the 18th century. The reason is that it played a big role as a training place for the people of East Africa and Persia.

At the South Coast of Kenya are found two of the best snorkeling and scuba diving sites in the country - Shimoni Village and Wasini Island. Shimoni is a village found 76 km south of Likoma, and close to the Kenya-Tanzania border. The village is most renowned for the Shimoni caves in which are found such artifacts as the well-preserved wooden crates used by slave masters to transport slaves to Arabia during the slave trade. Shimoni also marks the launching point to Wasini Island, situated a few minutes from Shimoni.
For many years, the 6 sq km Wasini Island has remained unchanged, remaining a small traditional fishing centre. The Island is close to Tanzania and is popular for the coral gardens (beautiful coral reef landscape) and the ancient Swahili-architecture ruins that date back to the Arab settlements of the 18th and 19th centuries. Dhows are the primary means to get to this coral island which has no cars or roads. The Fuba people - a Bantu tribe- inhabit this Island, and number about 1500. The Fuba are generally very friendly people and speak both Swahili and Kifuba languages.
