The term plus-size model refers to women who are larger than the standard size 8 in the US, who models apparel for female customers who are larger than the standard size in their respective countries. This plus-size industry grew fast and most prominently in North America, where the concept of being “big and beautiful” has promoted a culture around the country. Today, this industry also goes beyond the American shores to cater to women who couldn’t buy or who have difficulty finding clothes their size.
Many fashion designers and modeling scouts recognize the big potential of this modeling industry as a way to market plus-size clothings. In addition, it has positively impacted the society by stimulating debates on body image, eating disorders and self-esteem.
