A parrot is a wild animal. Since it will take some time to tame the bird, you should know the appropriate steps to make them feel that you are their friend.
Once the parrot is at your home, it is important that he be around people who love birds and that he stay in his cage for at least the first 24 hours. If the parrot appears nervous, slow down and allow it more time.
You must cover all your mirrors and close all your windows when you think that your parrot is set to come out of his cage. The bird will probably come out shortly, but if it fails to come out then try to tempt it with some good food or a tree branch. You should try to keep your hair in safety: covered or out of his way. You should also wear appropriate clothes that will not be snagged so fast.
Don’t ever speak in a loud voice to your parrots. Do not look straight into his eyes or he will think you are a predator.
If your parrot refuses to take nourishment directly from your hands then you might want to take some clippings and place them inside the cage. It is important to praise your parrot every time they eat so that they will easily eat their food from your hand.
In order to exercise their wings, parrot’s will need to fly occasionally. If you feel that the bird is still scared, then try using a bird stand that is fairly low and a couple of sticks with different lengths so that you can carry the bird around. Its best to have two sticks so the parrot is able to move around. Use slow, steady moves to avoid scaring the bird.
You might find taming your parrot in the first few weeks a little bit difficult. Now that there has been some improvement, further lessons can be taught, the bird can now learn commands such as “step up”. The parrot will learn that you are the master and that he must come to you immediately when this is said; this will be most important in cases where imminent danger is present so that you both can move to safety.
A very important command that you want your parrot to learn is “NO”. If the parrot does something wrong then correct the bird so it will know not to do it again.
It will take time to tame the bird. After your parrot’s initial fear has been conquered and there is now a bond of trust and friendship, you can begin to teach him to speak certain phrases or even to sing along with you.
